I’ve always believed that in business, setting real, tangible benchmarks is not only essential for growth, but also a bit of good fun. Targets, when grounded in reality, become the stepping stones that take your business to the next stage.
I remember clearly, around 25 years ago, telling my team: "We need a turnover of £20k per month – that’s what we need to cover your mortgages." It became a bit of an in-joke for years, but at the time, it was a very real and honest goal. Another benchmark I set was that we needed more clients in London than there are underground stations. At the time, that felt ambitious.
Well, there are 272 tube stations in London, and we’ve since more than doubled that number in clients, with an additional 500 clients outside of London. It’s a reminder of how targets evolve with time, and how ambition can lead to real achievement.
Today, we’ve raised the bar again — with our growth increments now set at £1 million, Funny how times change.
Cleaner Products was never created to be the biggest chemical manufacturer and supplier in London — our aim was always to be the best. And we’re proud to say, we’re well on our way to achieving that vision. Over the years, competitors have come and gone, some trying to chip away at our business in various ways. But truth be told, they haven’t even put a dent in our armour — if anything, their efforts have only added fuel to our fire.
It’s no coincidence that when you're riding the London Underground you hear the phrase, "Mind the Gap." That warning is becoming ever more relevant in our sector — as the gap between Cleaner Products and the major players continues to diminish.
